COVID-19: Daily infections in TN drop below 3,000

Chennai, July 10 (PTI): Tamil Nadu on Saturday reported 2,913 new COVID-19 cases, which include those of five returnees from other States, the Health Department said.

This pushed the total infected so far to 25,16,011, the department said.

Forty-nine deaths today took the toll to 33,371 till date, the department said.

As many as 3,321 people got discharged during the day aggregating to 24,49,873 leaving 32,767 active infections, according to a bulletin. The State reported its highest daily infection at 36,184 on May 21 and it has since been seeing a decline.

On May 30, it witnessed daily cases dropping below 30,000; on June 7 the numbers were below 20,000; and on June 17 they were less than 10,000.

As many as 29 districts reported new infections in double-digits. There were no new deaths in 16 districts, the bulletin said.

Chennai, the State capital, added 174 new infections aggregating to 5,34,819 till date.

The number of COVID-19 related fatalities in the capital reached 8,256.

Among the districts, Coimbatore added the maximum number of new cases at 338 in the last 24 hours and Ramanathapuram sas the least with six new infections.

The testing of RT-PCR samples stood at 1,50,412 in the last 24 hours, pushing the cumulative number of specimens examined so far to 3,43,98,110.

Of 49 fatalities, 43 were in government hospitals while the remaining were in private ones.

Nine of the deceased were without any co-morbidity or pre-existing illness. One of them was a 29-year-old woman from Chennai who tested positive on May 24 and died on June 6 due to COVID-19 pneumonia, the bulletin said.
