Crimes against women continue to rage on in India. In a shocking incident, TV actress Malvi Malhotra was stabbed with a knife on Monday by a Facebook friend after she refused to marry him. The incident took place in Mumbai’s Versova. Malvi is currently undergoing treatment at Kokilaben Ambani Hospital.

The accused, Yogesh Mahipal Singh, who was in a car, stopped her while she was returning home from a cafe and asked why she had discontinued talking to him, a police official said. This led to an argument and he stabbed Malhotra with a knife in the abdomen and on her hands and fled. The attacker is said to be a film producer who reportedly became Malvi's Facebook friend in 2019. They met a few times.

Malvi has registered a complaint against Kumar Mahipal Singh. She has alleged that the accused wanted her to marry him, but when Malvi rejected the proposal and stopped all communication, he attacked her. “We have registered an FIR against Singh under various Indian Penal Code sections, including 307 (attempt to murder), and are conducting an investigation into the case,” Versova police station's senior inspector Raghvendra Thakur said.

Malvi Malhotra has been part of the TV show Udaan and film Hotel Milan. Social media expressed anger at the incident and demanded strictest action by the police in this case.

“In India, ‘NO’ apparently means death by bullet or stabbing or an acid splash or rape or abduction,” pointed out Papri Banerjee on Twitter, questioning why men cannot simply take a no in this country.

Some social media users pointed out how there is no fear of law and the police. Many people tagged the Mumbai Police and Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, demanding action in the case.

Crimes against women continue to be brazen, whether it is in hinterland Hathras or in the middle of Mumbai. Where is the Indian woman safe then?
