After Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray’s request and Allahabad high court’s suggestion, the Centre is ‘seriously deliberating’ on reducing coronavirus vaccination age group, sources said.
The sources further said that supply chain, production and distribution system will be geared up for the drive. Also, modalities are being worked out to rationalise the gap between the doses, they said, adding that if things work out, the announcement could be made soon as government is keen to vaccinate maximum age groups.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra on Tuesday reported 55,469 fresh coronavirus positive cases, the second highest spike in the last two days, taking the tally of infections to 31,13,354, while 297 deaths pushed the toll to 56,330. State capital Mumbai saw 10,030 new cases the second highest daily count so far, while 31 patients succumbed to the infection, the most in a day since October-end.
At 10,030 new cases, Mumbai registered its second highest daily count after a record 11,163 infections were reported on April 4. The 31 fresh deaths were the highest in a 24-hour period since October-end, the data showed.
The state’s recovery rate now stands at 82.98 per cent and the fatality rate is 1.81 per cent. Maharashtra had reported the highest spike in daily cases on Sunday, when it added over 57,000 infections. With 2,01,693 new tests, the number of samples tested so far in Maharashtra has gone up to 2,09,17,486, it said.
All beaches in Mumbai have been shut for visitors till April 30 amid the surge in cases cases, the civic body announced on Tuesday. Municipal commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal issued the order to this effect directing all assistant municipal commissioners to ensure that all the beaches remain shut throughout this month.
“In continuation and confirmation of the said orders, the additional restrictions need to be strictly followed by all assistant commissioners of wards to control and arrest the spread of coronavirus on war footing,” stated the circular. The civic chief has also asked the Commissioner of Mumbai Police to direct police officers to help assistant commissioners of civic wards in implementing this order.
