Coronavirus LIVE Updates: In the highest single day surge, Kerala reported 1,298 fresh COVID-19 positive cases on Thursday, as the infection tally breached the 30,000 mark and the death toll climbed to 97. Of the positive cases, 1,017 were infected through contact, while the source of infection of 76 people is not yet known, Health minister K K Shailaja said. The fresh cases include 29 health workers.
Convalescent plasma therapy did not show benefit in reducing mortality risk among COVID-19 patients, according to an interim analysis of a randomised controlled trial done at AIIMS, Delhi to assess the efficacy of this mode of treatment.
During the trial, one group of patients was given convalescent plasma therapy along with the standard supportive treatment while the other group only received standard treatment. The number of fatalities recorded in both the groups was equal and there was not much clinical improvement in the condition of patients, he said.
Meanwhile, Novavax Inc said it has signed a supply and license agreement with the Serum Institute of India for the development and commercialization of its COVID-19 vaccine candidate. The Indian drugmaker will have exclusive rights for the shot in India during the term of the deal and non-exclusive rights during the "Pandemic Period" in all countries other than those assigned by the World Bank as upper-middle or high-income countries, news agency Reuters reported.

◕ The total number of recoveries among COVID-19 patients in India has jumped to 13,28,336, pushing the recovery rate to 67.62 per cent on Thursday, while the case fatality rate has further dropped to 2.07 per cent, the Union health ministry said.
◕ Scientists have assessed respiratory samples from 35 COVID-19 patients, and found that contagious coronavirus was "rarely detectable" beyond eight days after onset of illness, an advance that can help develop better self-isolation and quarantining protocols to curb the spread of the pandemic. The study, published in the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases, analysed 68 respiratory specimens from 35 COVID-19 patients in Hong Kong, of whom 32 had mild disease, and found that the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 was rarely detectable beyond eight days after onset of illness.
◕ Uttar Pradesh reported 4,658 new COVID-19 cases and 63 death in the last 24 hours, taking active cases to 43,654 and death toll to 1,918. A total of 63,402 have been discharged in the state so far, the state health department said.
◕ Karnataka Minister of Cooperation ST Somashekar and two Janata Dal-Secular legislators -- GT Devegowda and Naganagouda Kandkur -- tested positive for coronavirus and are under treatment, an official said on Thursday. "Though Somashekar tested positive for COVID-19, he is asymptomatic and quarantined at home in the city. His office has also been sealed after his personal assistant too tested positive for the virus," the department official said.
◕ Delhi government sends proposal to Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal recommending to open hotels, gyms and weekly markets, citing fall in the number of COVID-19 cases in national capital, news agency ANI reported.
◕ No Benefit of Plasma Therapy | AIIMS Director Dr Randeep Guleria said on Thursday no clear mortality benefit of convalescent plasma therapy was seen during a trial conducted among 30 COVID-19 patients. "However, this is just an interim analysis and we need to do a more detailed evaluation to see if any sub-group may benefit from plasma therapy," Dr Guleria said. He also underlined that plasma has to be tested for its safety and should have sufficient antibody to be useful to COVID-19 patients.
◕ Senior CPI-M leader and trade union leader Shyamal Chakraborty succumbed to Covid-19 on Thursday. Chakraborty was admitted to a private hospital in Kolkata on July 29 after he tested positive for Covid-19. Meanwhile, with 904 new Covid-19 deaths in the last 24 hours, India's fatalities crossed the 40,000-mark on Thursday. The total Covid-19 cases climbed to 19,64,536.
◕ Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath asked officials to take COVID-19 as a challenge and intensify the fight against it. He also directed them to improve the health facilities in Kanpur, Varanasi, Jhansi, Gorakhpur and Prayagraj and send a team of experts from the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) and King George's Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow to Kanpur for guidance.
◕ Two personnel of Nagpur police died of COVID-19 on Thursday, becoming the first fatalities of the pandemic in the city police force, an official said. A 50-year-old head constable and a 54-year-old assistant sub-inspector succumbed to COVID-19 infection at government-run hospitals in Nagpur city in the early hours of the day, a public relations officer of Nagpur police said.
◕ Senior CPI-M leader and trade union leader Shyamal Chakraborty succumbed to Covid-19 on Thursday. Chakraborty was admitted to a private hospital in Kolkata on 29 July after he tested positive for Covid-19. Chakraborty served as a cabinet minister in Bengal's erstwhile Left Front government when Jyoti Basu was the chief minister.
◕ Telangana to Conduct 40k COVID-19 Tests Daily | The Telangana government has decided to conduct 40,000 COVID-19 tests daily and also keep 10,000 oxygen beds ready all over the State, an official release has said. The Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao-led cabinet which met here on Wednesday discussed threadbare the coronavirus spread, the treatment being given to those affected and further strengthening of the public health system, an official release issued Wednesday night said.
◕ Over 56,000 New Cases Push India's COVID-19 Count to 19,64,536 | India recorded a single-day jump of 56,282 cases taking the country's COVID-19 tally to 19,64,536 on Thursday, while the recoveries have increased to 13,28,336 and comprise 67.62 per cent of the total caseload, according to the Union Health Ministry data.
◕ 6,64,949 Samples Tested in Last 24 Hours | In the last 24 hours, India tested 6,64,949 samples taking the total number of samples tested to 2,21,49,351, the ministry of health and family welfare said on Thursday.
◕ Odisha's COVID-19 Caseload Crosses 39,000-mark | Odisha's COVID-19 caseload mounted to 39,018 on Wednesday, with the detection of 1,337 new infections, while nine more fatalities pushed its coronavirus death toll to 225, a health official said. The state's recovery figure also breached the 25,000-mark after 1,255 individuals were cured of the disease during the last 24 hours.

◕ Doctors at the Houston Methodist Hospital have used a new drug called RLF-100, also known as aviptadil, that has led to rapid recovery from respiratory failure in critically ill COVID-19 patients. The drug has been approved by the FDA for emergency use at multiple clinical sites in patients who are too ill to enter the FDA's Phase 2/3 trials.
◕ Severe COVID-19 May be Less Deadly in Children | Children with novel coronavirus rarely become critically sick, and when they do, they tend to have better outcomes than adults, based on early data from an ongoing study. The Critical Coronavirus and Kids Epidemiology (CAKE) study involves 65 pediatric intensive care units in 18 countries, Reuters reported. In a paper published on Wednesday in the journal Pediatrics, the study team reported on the first 17 children with severe COVID-19 from 10 hospitals in Chile, Colombia, Italy, Spain and the United States.
