Congress tweets old video showing PM Modi with rapist Asaram, sparks controversy
The Congress Party launched a fresh attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi after self-styled godman Asaram was convicted by a Jodhpur court today for raping a minor in 2013, by tweeting a video showing PM Modi sharing stages with Asaram.
The Congress shared the video saying, "A man is known by the company he keeps" - Aesop's fables," along with #AsaramVerdict.
WATCH THE VIDEO HERE:
A special court in Jodhpur held self-styled godman Asaram guilty of raping a minor. The case dates back to 2013. A 16-year-old girl accused Asaram of rape on the intervening night of August 15 and 16 at his ashram in Jodhpur.
Out of the five people charged of rape, three of the accused - Asaram, Sharat and Shilpi have been convicted. The court let off the other two accused.
The verdict was announced by Judge Madhu Sudan Sharma in Jodhpur this morning. Asaram was arrested in 2013 and has been in jail ever since.
The father of the minor who was raped by Asaram demanded stringent punishment for the self-proclaimed godman.
"The court has given us justice in this case. He should be given a stringent punishment," the victim's father said.
ASARAM AND PM MODI
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and rapist Asaram were not exactly cordial as one might seem to think after watching the video shared by Congress.
In September, 2012 Asaram issued a threat to the Narendra Modi-led Gujarat government cautioning it against targeting him and his son Narayan Sai in a case related to the mysterious death of two students. This came days after Asaram surviving a helicopter crash.
In a public address, Asaram warned then Chief Minister Narendra Modi saying, "If you try to suppress us more, we will throw you out [of power]".
Gujarat Chief Minister and the BJP's election committee chief Narendra Modi is reportedly unhappy with BJP leaders coming to the defence of Asaram Bapu, the self-styled godman currently accused in a case of sexual assault.
In 2013, Narendra Modi, who was then Gujarat Chief Minister and the BJP's election committee chief, was unhappy with BJP leaders defending Asaram who was accused of sexual assault.
Modi spoke to then party president Rajnath Singh and asked him to ensure that no spokesperson or leader is seen or heard defending Asaram.
It will be interesting to see how the Bharatiya Janata Party will respond to Congress's attack. We will update this space as and when.
