A day after Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi was admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi, the hospital on Friday, 31 July, said she is showing "satisfactory improvement".
“Congress President Sonia Gandhi was admitted yesterday evening at 7 pm. Her investigations are being carried out and she is showing satisfactory improvement,” said Dr DS Rana, Chairperson (Board of Management), Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, on Friday.
The Congress chief was admitted to the hospital on Thursday for routine tests and investigations. "Her condition is currently stable," Dr Rana had said on Thursday.
Earlier on Thursday, Gandhi had held a virtual meeting with senior Congress MPs including Digvijaya Singh, KC Venugopal and others, to discuss the political situation in the country, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the New Education Policy, among other matters.
Bring Back Rahul, Say Congress Leaders
During the meeting with senior Congress leaders, there was reportedly a clamour to have Rahul Gandhi back at the helm of the Congress, to handle the ongoing political storm.
Rahul was not in attendance. A deepening rift is reportedly appearing in the party with many of the senior leaders including Kapil Sibal, Shashi Tharoor, among others, questioning the leadership as the party confronts crises in many states, reported NDTV.
The Ashok Gehlot-led government in Rajasthan is facing a crisis after the rebellion by his erstwhile deputy Sachin Pilot and 18 other Congress MLAs. Before Pilot, another of Rahul’s close aides, Jyotiraditya Scindia, had defected to the BJP.
KC Venugopal, Rajeev Satav, Bhupinder Singh Hooda are reported to be some of the leaders who posited Rahul’s name in the meeting, as the correct person to helm the party’s affairs at this time.
Following the Congress’ debacle in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Rahul Gandhi had stepped down as the chief of the party. Later, Sonia Gandhi took upon the post of interim president.
