Congress President Sonia Gandhi, son Rahul return to India from US

Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Vice President Rahul Gandhi returned to Delhi on Thursday night.

Sonia Gandhi had travelled to the United States of America for a health check up while the Amethi MP travelled to the country to be with her mother and accompany her while returning.

The Congress president went abroad on March 8.

Sonia Gandhi took ill in August last year during a road show in Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh and has remained out of public gaze ever since.

Usually, it is either Rahul Gandhi or daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra who accompany their mother for her treatment abroad but due to the assembly elections this year, the Congress president had to travel alone to the United States.

A week back, after attending the swearing in ceremony of Captain Amarinder Singh as Punjab Chief Minister, Rahul Gandhi left India to accompany his ailing mother who was undergoing treatment while Priyanka Gandhi Vadra stayed in India.

Rahul's trip abroad came amid calls within the party for "structural change" after the Congress's disastrous showing in the crucial election in Uttar Pradesh, where the party won just seven seats.
