Lovely, a popular face in Delhi's political circles, was a minister in the Sheila Dikshit government. His joining the BJP is being read by many as a big setback to the Congress.

Sheila Dikshit called Arvind Singh Lovely's decision to join the BJP "unfortunate" and was d by ANI as saying that "when leaders who get everything from the party leave, then whom do you trust?"

Dikshit, who was the chief minister of Delhi for 15 years, also said that "the current Delhi Congress chief is not able to reach out to leaders as is needed and that is a reason for people leaving" the party.

Arvinder Singh Lovely was elected as the general secretary of Delhi Pradesh Youth Congress in 1990. In 1998, he was elected to the Delhi Legislative Assembly and was the youngest member in the House.
