Cong slams UP govt's vaccination drive, alleges their appointment with governor cancelled abruptly

Lucknow, Jun 4 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh Congress Friday attacked the Yogi Adityanath government over the alleged slow pace of vaccination against coronavirus, and claimed that at this rate it would take 13 years to inoculate the state's 22 crore population.

Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Kumar Lallu also said they had sought Governor Anandiben Patel's appointment to raise this and other issues related to the coronavirus crisis, which was granted before being 'abruptly cancelled'.

It is against democratic norms and sets a wrong precedent, he said.

Speaking to mediapersons here, Lallu said, 'The UP government, which pats itself on the back by giving both doses to 34 lakh people of the state with a population of 22 crore, would take about 13 years to vaccinate all. The crisis is deepening because of the government's vaccination policy and its slow pace.' At this rate, it will take about 13 years to vaccinate everyone in the state, he claimed.

He alleged the Uttar Pradesh has vaccinated the least number of people after Bihar, and that the Yogi Adityanath government is 'cheating the state by making false claims'.

Only 1,500 vaccination centres have been set up by the government for 22 crore people and there are continuous reports of some of these sites not having jabs, he claimed.

There is no arrangement for people who do not have internet facility for booking their vaccination slot online or those who lack relevant documents, he claimed.

'Only 80 per cent people in urban areas and 22 per cent in rural have access to internet. How will they be vaccinated?' he asked. Senior Congress leader and the party's Chhattisgarh affairs in-charge P L Punia, who also addressed the reporters, said the BJP government's alleged lack of vision and 'wrong policies' have caused immense hardships to people.

The present policies being pursued by the government are not enough to save the people from the pandemic, Punia alleged.

The Congress' attack comes days after BJP vice president Radha Mohan Singh dismissed speculation of any change of leadership in Uttar Pradesh and called the state government's handling of the Covid pandemic 'unparalleled'. PTI SAB TIR TIR
