The Information and Broadcast Ministry, on December 11, banned the broadcast of condom ads on the grounds that it is indecent for viewing of children and might lead to unhealthy practices. This has sparked off a row among netizens. Many argue that the move is regressive and shocking at a time when sex education is the need of the hour. On the other hand, a few state that the ads were indeed obscene and applauded the decision to ban condom ads during the day. Another set of audience said that instead of a blanket ban, the bold content of the video ads could perhaps be toned down a little. Here are some of the condom ads that are currently on air. From ‘Garv se bolo condom’  and the slight hints of passion in Kohinoor’s Xtra Time Condom ad to the bolder ones in recent times, the ads and its content have changed (for the better?). Moreover, while the very mention of condoms was a taboo a few years ago, today, celebrities come forward and advertise condoms as their presence might probably have more impact on the audience. Sunny Leone, Bipasha Basu, Karan Singh Grover and Ranveer Singh are a few whose bold ads have made headlines in recent times.

Manforce Jasmine Commercial featuring Sunny Leone

This advertisement was released by Manforce Condoms in February this year. The video shows an intimate first-night scene between adult star turned actor Sunny Leone and a male actor. As the duo get passionate, a sensuous track plays in the backdrop.

Manforce More Condoms featuring Sunny Leone:

Besides the first-night ad, Manforce has also launched a beach ad featuring Sunny. Although it was first aired about two years ago, it is still aired on the television at times.

Playgard Condom featuring Bipasha Basu and Karan Singh Grover:

This hot, passionate featuring actors Bipasha Basu and her husband Karan Singh Grover set the temperatures soaring just as winter was settling in the country. The ad was uploaded by its makers, Alkem Healthcare, on YouTube with the caption: The ultimate pleasure lies in the journey and not the destination. Savour every second and every minute slowly. If you want more, you #GiveHerMore. Reportedly, this hot ad irritated Salman Khan, who demanded that it shouldn’t be aired during the ad breaks of Bigg Boss 11, which he is hosting.

Durex ad featuring Ranveer Singh:

This ad was well-received by the audience, mostly because it shows the woman taking charge of ‘safe-sex’ by carrying a condom. The suggestive thrusts and movements of Ranveer Singh might have raised a few eyebrows, but it perhaps played it safe by not showing the actors getting intimate.

This bold ad took many by surprise, as Ranveer was among the first Bollywood A-lister to feature in a condom ad. The ad was bold, fun and had a catchy tune and tagline – Do The Rex – which created a good brand recall for Durex.

Skore dotted condom;

This ad was published by Skore in June this year, and is perhaps one of the few condom ads that feature just the woman. It was largely to popularise the brand’s range of dotted condoms.
