Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi on Friday, 18 October, sent a letter to the Centre recommending Justice S A Bobde, the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, as his successor.
Justice Gogoi wrote a letter to the Ministry of Law and Justice recommending Justice Bobde to be the next chief justice.
CJI Ranjan Gogoi’s term as the Chief Justice is set to end on 17 November and as per convention he has recommended the next senior judge after him as his successor.
Who’s Justice SA Bobde?
Sharad Arvind Bobde or SA Bobde is a judge in the Supreme Court of India and is next in line to be the 47th Chief justice of India. Justice Bobde has previously served as the Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court.
He is also serving as the Chancellor of Maharashtra National Law University, Mumbai and Maharashtra National Law University, Nagpur.
Born on 24 April 1956 at Nagpur, Maharashtra, Justice Bobde holds BA and LLB Degrees from Nagpur University and enrolled on the Roll of the Bar Council of Maharashtra in 1978.
Justice SA Bobde practised at the Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court with appearances before the principal seat at Bombay and before the Supreme Court of India, and became Senior Advocate in 1998.
He was appointed as an additional judge of Bombay High Court on 29 March 2000 and joined as Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court on 16 October 2012.
On 12 April 2013, Justice Bobde was elevated as a judge of the Supreme Court of India and he is due to retire on 23rd April 2021.
- Aadhaar: Justice Bobde was a member of the three-judge bench which ratified an earlier order of the Supreme Court and clarified that no Indian citizen without an Aadhaar card can be deprived of basic services and government subsidies.
- Pro-Life: A two-judge bench of the Indian Supreme Court, comprising Justice Bobde and L Nageswara Rao in 2017, rejected a woman's plea seeking termination of her foetus, based on the medical board's report that the 26-week-old foetus had a chance of survival.
- Environment: A three-judge bench of the Indian Supreme Court, comprising SA Bobde, T S Thakur and Arjan Kumar Sikri in 2016, in relation to the extreme air pollution in the National Capital Region, suspended the sales of fire crackers in the region.
Justice Bobde also headed the in-house committee which probed the allegations of sexual harassment against CJI Ranjan Gogoi and gave him a clean chit in the matter.
- Ayodhya Title Dispute: Justice Bobde is also a part of the five-judge constitution bench which heard the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid land dispute case.
