Cinema’s response to moviegoers who want to sit together tickles netizens

Netizens were tickled by a Facebook post from Malaysian cinema chain GSCinemas that was posted yesterday in response to people asking whether they could sit together in theatres.

Theatres reopen today but moviegoers are still required to observe safe distancing measures and have to sit at least a meter apart at all times. This applies to couples or families going to the theatres together.

The tongue-in-cheek post by GSCinemas included what looks like a list of frequently asked questions by patrons. The seemingly exasperated cinema chain replied to all of them with a “HELLO, CANNOT.”

The questions listed in the post were:

“I come with girlfriend/boyfriend, cannot sit together meh?”

“I come with my friend, can sit together ah?”

“From same house, cannot ah?”

“Can sit on my lap ah?”

The post has received more than 41,000 reactions, 24,000 shares and nearly 10,000 comments from mostly amused netizens.

“Finally, I can own both of the hand rest cushion,” Colin Hwang said.

“Great moment for the….All the single ladies,” Aiza Zainol said on Instagram.

Meanwhile, others were a little disappointed. Facebook user Dinesh Rajendran said: “If this happen last year means so happy to watch alone. But now I couple already.”

All of Malaysia’s theatres reopen today. Each cinema is limited to up to 250 people, subject to the size of the theatre halls. Those under 12 or above 60 years old are not allowed entry for now.
