Chrissy Teigen is defending her decision to wear shapewear during her pregnancy.

On Sunday, the expectant model took to social media to defend pal Kim Kardashian West’s new collection of Skims maternity wear — undergarments specifically designed to “support” women throughout their pregnancy.

Kardashian West, who launched her smoothing shape and lounge wear brand, Skims, in 2019, received backlash online after announcing the Sept. 16 release of her maternity collection.

The chief argument against maternity shapewear was the assumption that the brand was encouraging pregnant women to prioritize their looks and appear as slim as possible as their body grows and and changes.

Activist and actress Jameela Jamil addressed the concept of maternity shapewear on Twitter, suggesting they reinforce the idea that women are “embarrassed” of their growing bodies.

“It would be so cool if pregnant people could just be allowed to be pregnant and get bigger and not be self conscious, and enjoy the miracle taking place inside their body and not have to worry about feeling embarrassed/shamed that their body is changing for an amazing reason,” she tweeted.

In a separate post to Instagram, Jamil expanded on her concerns, writing that she wishes society would “normalize” focusing on the health of pregnant women, rather than emphasize and critique them externally.

“You don’t need your shape corrected or hidden. You don’t need an even more awkward obstacle between you and a piss,” she added. “You just need to try and ride with this miracle and do your best to be as happy/comfortable as is possible within your circumstances. Pregnancy is hard enough, with enough worries already.”

In a lengthy post to her Instagram stories, Teigen posed wearing the Maternity Nursing Sculpting Bra ($42) and the Maternity Sculpting Short ($34) from the Skims maternity line, to set the record straight on why women opt for shapewear during their pregnancy.

According to Teigen, she enjoys wearing shapewear because it’s more comfortable than other underwear that “rolls inside of folds” of her changing body.

“This is not about creating a body that we don’t know we have. We’re not trying to do anything to trick you, we’re pregnant. We would just like to feel good about ourselves in a time where mentally, it can be really challenging. Spanx has been doing this for a long time....what’s the big deal?” Teigen said. “I’m not doing it to get a waistline. I merely want to wear underwear that’s pretty, that I feel good in, that’s soft and comfortable, that stretches comfortably over my belly - that my p—— doesn’t eat.
