Chistmas promo goes wrong in Australia

The stampede occurred after an event billed as the "ultimate mega balloon drop" led to shoppers scrambling for free gifts. Local media reported that some shoppers had suffered chest, neck, leg and back injuries.

Video obtained by Reuters showed the crowd scrambling for balloons filled with free gifts and crushing a barricade.

"I was very worried that someone could get hurt," said Jonathan Nott, who filmed the video around midnight on Tuesday.

"It did not look like a safe area for a large crowd to scramble for balloons."

Scentre Group, who owns and operates the Westfield shopping chain in Australia, told local media that it is currently "investigating" the incident.
