Child falls into pen, wild dogs savage him

London, Nov 5 (IANS) A two-year-old boy fell into an enclosure in a US zoo, and a pack of wild dogs in it mauled him to death.

Shocked day-trippers watched in horror in the Pittsburgh zoo, as the toddler was mauled by the dogs. He tumbled 14 feet from a wooden railing into the wild animals' pen, The Sun reported Monday.

Angela Cinti, who witnessed the Sunday's incident, said: "The screams just kept coming and coming... There were three dogs - one at his head, one on the left side of his neck and another one down by his leg."

"A zoo employee got there and hopped over a fence with a rake and he was banging, trying to distract the dogs," she added. Many people, witnessing the attack, collapsed in tears.

Officials said it was unclear if the child died from the fall or the savaging by the 11 African painted dogs.

Police chief Lt. Kevin Kraus said the boy's 34-year-old mother had stood him up on the railing. "Almost immediately after, he lost his balance, fell down off the railing into the pit and was attacked by 11 dogs."
