Chennai Police intensifies probe in gangrape case involving 11-year-old girl

Based on the victim's identification, the police have arrested 17 suspects and are on the lookout for more persons involved in the gruesome incident.

The Chennai City Police have intensified investigations in the alleged sexual assault of a 11-year-old girl in Aynavaram. The police have added more sections under the IPC in addition to those under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) to make it a water tight case.

A special team headed by Deputy Commissioner S Rajendran have started investigations in the gated community.

Based on the victim's identification, the police have arrested 17 suspects and are on the lookout for more persons involved in the gruesome incident.

Police sources said that the accused were booked under section 10 (punishment for aggravated penetrative sexual assault), section 12 (punishment for sexual harassment) and section 5 (punishment for aggravated penetrative sexual assault) of the POCSO Act.

Following a directive from the Madras High Court, a special medical team comprising of six doctors including a psychiatrist has been formed to counsel the young girl.

The team will have specialists in pediatrics, gynaecology, gastroenterology and psychology from government hospitals. Sources say the family has requested privacy and counselling will begin soon.

The minor girl was allegedly gang raped by 17 men 7 months ago. The incident came to light after the victim confronted in her elder sister.
