Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express Catches Fire Near Jalpaiguri; 2 Passengers Killed: Reports

Kolkata, March 22: A Dibrugarh-bound train caught fire on Friday, leading to the death of at least two passengers onboard. The blaze, according to reports, erupted in three compartments of the Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express in the afternoon. The location where the fire incident was reported is Chathaat station in West Bengal, close to the city of Jalpaiguri.

At least fire tenders from Phansewada and New Jalpaiguri Junction have been rushed to Chathaat - a location so remote that mobile network is hardly available. Scores of passengers were left injured and rushed to nearest medical facilities as they jumped out of the moving train when the fire erupted.

Partha Pratim Roy, ADRM of New Jalpaiguri Junction, said the Railways has dispatched additional rescue personnel to the spot apart from the fire tenders. The goal is minimise the number of casualties, Roy sai, adding that further details are awaited.
