Centre places orders for 44 million doses of Covishield and Covaxin

The government ordered 44 crore doses of Covishield and Covaxin on Tuesday, a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that the Centre would take over the state procurement quota and distribute free jabs to state governments for vaccination of all adults over the age of 18. The manufacturer of these 44 crore doses of COVID-19 vaccine would supply them between August and December 2021, according to the Union Health Ministry. The Centre has been supporting states and union territories' efforts for an efficient immunization push under the "whole of government approach" since January 16 this year, according to the official letter.
