Centre gives go-ahead to proposal of setting up of Science City in Guwahati

The government has already set up a Science city in Kolkata, Lucknow, Kapurthala and Ahmadabad.

The Centre has given its green signal to the proposal of setting up of a Science City in Guwahati in Assam.

Minister of State for Culture and Tourism (Independent Charge) Dr. Mahesh Sharma informed about this decision in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.

"Proposals have been received from governments of Bihar, Karnataka, Haryana, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh to set up science cities in their states," Sharma said in his reply.

The government has already set up a Science city in Kolkata, Lucknow, Kapurthala and Ahmadabad.

The Science Cities' Scheme provides for setting up of science cities in all states of the country, subject to availability of funds for this purpose.

OBJECTIVES FOR ESTABLISHING A SCIENCE CITY INCLUDE:

  • Portraying the growth of science and technology and their applications in industry and human welfare.
  • Popularising and enhancing the understanding of science and technology in cities, in urban and rural areas for the benefit of students and for the common man.
