CBI summons Mamata's nephew's wife in the case of 'illegal coal-mining'

Two days after Union Home Minister Amit Shah received a court summons in a 2018 criminal defamation case filed by Bengal MP Abhishek Banerjee, a CBI team appeared at the south Kolkata home of the Trinamool Congress official on Sunday to give a summons to his wife for questioning in a coal-mining scam case filed last November.

With a summons to appear for questioning on Monday, the department later visited the sister-in-law of the Diamond Harbour MP. Abhishek, who is the nephew of CM Mamata Banerjee, was at the epicentre of a no-holds-barred pre-poll fight between Trinamool and BJP, laced with the "bhatija" barbs of the latter and the "outsider" retorts of the Bengal faction. At 2 pm, four officers from the CBI anti-corruption branch appeared at Shantiniketan, Abhishek's home on Harish Mukherjee Lane, with a notice under Section 160 of the CrPCC for his wife Rujira Banerjee Naroola (power to order the attendance of witnesses).
