The Confederation of Africa Football has officially confirmed Kenya’s participation in the 2019 Afcon finals.
Caf has since written to the Football Kenya Federation confirming the disqualification of Sierra Leone from the ongoing qualifiers.
With Kenya topping the group F with seven points, one ahead of Ghana and Ethiopia, the only other group member with a single point, Stars are poised to grace the bi-annual event for the first time since 2004 irrespective of the outcome between their final Group F game against Ghana
“We regrettably inform you that following CAF Executive Committee meeting held in Accra, Ghana on the 30th of November 2018, the team of Sierra Leone has been disqualified from the qualifiers of the Total 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
“We hereby inform you that all matches played by Sierra Leone in the Group Stage of the said qualifiers are to be annulled. Hence, Group F would consist of only three teams (Ethiopia, Ghana & Kenya).
“We take this opportunity to stress the fact that even though the group consists of three teams, the two highest ranked teams of the group at the end of the qualifying phase shall qualify to the final tournament of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations,” Caf said in a letter signed by the body’s Deputy General Secretary Football & Development, Anthony Baffoe.
Kenya are set to take on Ghana in March for the return leg. Stars beat a much-fancied Ghana at home and the return leg will be a mere formality as both teams have already booked their slots in the next tournament.
