Botswana 0-1 Zambia: Chipolopolo lift Cosafa Cup crown

Kaseba’s late goal against the Zebras helped Chipolopolo emerge as 2019 Cosafa Cup champions

The 2019 Cosafa Cup tournament came to a conclusion on Saturday afternoon when Botswana locked horns against Zambia in the final at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Looking at the previous matches, Chipolopolo reached the final at the expense of 2018 champions Zimbabwe whilst the Zebras overcame Lesotho in the semi-finals.

As early as the fourth minute, the Zebras had the upper hand and probed for an early goal, when Mothusi Cooper unleashed a powerful shot which was saved by goalkeeper Sebastian Mwange.

The 2012 African champions nearly broke the deadlock in the 11th minute when they gained possession in the opposite half, but Lazarous Kambole could not direct his effort on target with goalkeeper Ezekiel Morake off his line.

Coach Mogomotsi Mpote’s troops continued to hold their ground after 20 minutes and they were denied by Mwange from close range on the far post resulting from a corner kick.

Botswana continued to probe for a goal in the 37th minute, but skipper Joel Mogorosi’s dangerous cross was cleared for a corner by Adrian Chama right in front of goal.

Three minutes later, Tapson Kaseba would also come close to beating Morake on his top corner after receiving a telling cross from the right wing, yet the Zambian forward failed to hit the target.

Botswana enjoyed more dominance in the latter stages in the opening half, yet had nothing to show for their efforts at half time.

Aggrey Chiyangi’s troops came out of the tunnel with more intent and they came close to finding a goal through Kaseba, whose header went over the cross from a corner kick in the 50th minute.

As they resorted to speed and quick interchange of passes, Botswana received a free-kick on the edge of the area, but Segolame Boy’s left-footed attempt was parried away for a corner kick in the 63rd minute.

With 12 minutes to go, Zambia finally broke the deadlock through Kaseba,  who latched onto a cross from the right wing to beat Morake making it 1-0.

Kaseba would be denied by the woodwork from securing a brace in the 81st minute when he unleashed a wonderful strike in the box.

Despite their push to score an equaliser and force the match into extra time, it was too late for the Zebras as Zambia claimed their fifth regional title.
