Black Fungus Epidemic: Health Ministry directs states to make black fungus a notifiable disease

The Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has written to all the states and union territories directing them to classify black fungus or mucormycosis as a notifiable disease. All medical colleges and hospitals will now have to work according to the guidelines issued by the Ministry and by ICMR with respect to the black fungus disease. This development comes after three states including Rajasthan, Haryana and Telangana have already declared black fungus as an epidemic. The cases are on a rise and 90 people have already been killed due to this fungal infection in the state of Maharashtra alone. Black Fungus is affecting both COVID and post-COVID patients and is likely a result of over-dose of steroids.
