Black fungus or mucormycosis is swiftly spreading and experts are advising an early treatment after cases are reported in over 10 states. Its latest treatment drug amphotericin B has seen an increased demand in the past few days. This rare black fungal infection is life threatening and deadly, it is being detected in patients who are covid positive. Dr Randeep Guleria, Director AIIMS talks about this issue and advises on maintaining blood sugar levels of covid patients to curb mucormycosis symptoms and prevention of this disease, because 90% of patients who have caught the infection were suffering from diabetes. He also suggests that with the growing number of cases, the hospitals must follow infection prevention protocols to avoid any spread as these secondary bacteria and fungal infections are affecting the immunity of covid patients leading to higher morbidity and mortality. Doctors have come up with theories and have informed that excess use of steroid on patients can also cause black fungus.
