Karnataka assembly elections have been full of drama and suspense. The BJP, even after being the single largest party, has not been able to get the 112 seats required to form the government.
The Congress made the most of it by joining hands with JD(S) to form the government, making JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy the preferred chief ministerial candidate.
Amid the interesting turn of events on Tuesday, an old video of late BJP leader Pramod Mahajan of 1997 is doing the rounds on social media. In the video, Mahajan tells the Lok Sabha how he explained the state of the Indian democracy to the Chinese during a visit, but the striking resemblance to the stalemate in Karnataka makes it sound like Mahajan is expounding Karnataka’s political situation today.
The video shows Mahajan telling the House that he was asked how democracy is doing in India, to which his response confused the Chinese. He said, “I am a leader from the single largest party, yet I am in the opposition. Leader from the second largest party is also outside the government but is supporting the government,” he added.
"The leader from the third largest party is a member of the front but he is also not a part of the government. In fact, the person from the smallest party has formed the government. That too, by himself."
The whole house burst into unanimous laughter on Mahajan’s words.
Mahajan’s words in 1997 sums up the scenario in Karnataka quite perfectly. People on Twitter have been sharing the video widely as history has repeated itself after 21 years.
With 79 MPs of Janata Dal, Deve Gowda had become the PM. That's less than 15% of total MPs.— Kiran Kumar S (@KiranKS) May 15, 2018
With 38 MLAs of JDS, Kumaraswamy wants to become the CM. That's 17% of total seats.
Only in India! Pramod Mahajan's soul would be laughing from heavens.#KarnatakaVerdict
