BJP legal cell observes ‘Black Day’ in Agartala to mark anniversary of ‘1975 Emergency’

Agartala (Tripura), June 25 (ANI): The legal cell of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Tripura observed June 25 as ‘Black Day’ to protest against the imposition of Emergency on the nation by the then Congress government headed by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975. Advocates with banners and placards took part in a protest procession in the capital Agartala. Prime Minister Indira Gandhi unilaterally had a state of emergency declared across the country for 21 month period in 1975-77. Officially issued by President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed under Article 352(1) of the Constitution for "internal disturbance", the Emergency was in effect from 25 June 1975 until its withdrawal on 21 March 1977.
