A day after the Congress attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighting his association with rape convict Asaram Bapu, the BJP today attacked Nehru-Gandhi scion Rahul Gandhi calling him "the Bahadur Shah Zafar of the Congress".
The BJP went to the extent of predicting the outcome of the Karnataka Assembly election and said the Congress' rout would be the last blow for Rahul Gandhi.
"With him [Rahul Gandhi] will sink the Congress party, like the Mughal dynasty, once and for all," the BJP said in a tweet.
The tweet was in response to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's statement claiming that the youth in the state admire Rahul Gandhi and that the latter's canvassing has had a major impact on the young voters.
With Karnataka Assembly election approaching fast, the BJP and the Congress have stepped up their attack on each other. The target for both are their top leaders.
The Karnataka unit of the BJP posted a tweet at 9.10 am today spelling out the party's agenda in the southern state.
Hashtagged 'Karnataka Trusts Modi', the post said, "We have a three pronged agenda for Karnataka - development, fast-paced development and all round development. The BJP has given primary importance to politics of development."
The Congress took no time to post a riposte to the BJP's tweet.
The Congress, which seeks to retain power in Karnataka, took just 19 minutes to post a tweet taking dig at the BJP.
It sought to highlight the allegations and charges of corruption against BJP's chief ministerial candidate BS Yeddyurappa and the Reddy brothers, seven of whom have been fielded by the party in the upcoming election.
In a direct attack on the BJP, the Karnataka Congress said, "The BJP has a three-pronged agenda for Karnataka - development of corrupt Yeddy-Reddys, fast-paced development of corrupt Yeddy-Reddys and all-round development of corrupt Yeddy-Reddys. The BJP has given primary importance to politics of corruption."
The Congress posted its tweet with the hashtag 'Karnataka Defeats BJP'.
The BJP did not let the opportunity go waste. It posted a couple of tweets attacking Rahul Gandhi.
The BJP sought to avenge the assault by calling Rahul Gandhi "the Bahadur Shah Zafar of the Congress".
Even yesterday, the Congress's Twitter handle had singled out PM Modi after self-styled spiritual guru Asaram Bapu was convicted by a special Jodhpur court in the rape of a minor girl five years ago.
It posted a video clip showing Modi and Asaram together on several occasions.
However, that was countered by the BJP supporters who posted photographs of senior Congress leaders such as Kamal Nath, Ashok Gehlot, Digvijaya Singh and Motilal Vora with the convicted self-styled godman.
They also tweeted photographs of Rahul Gandhi with RJD supremo and corruption convict Lalu Prasad and 1984 anti-Sikh riots accused Jagdish Tytler to drive home their point.
With both the Congress and BJP taking to aggression, the war between the two parties on the ground and the social media is likely to aggravate in the days to come.
