Bhadrak, April 30: Odisha Police arrested Bikash Shrestha, a BJP youth wing leader on Sunday, in connection with the Bhadrak communal violence. Shrestha was held for his alleged role in the riots, which broke out earlier in the month. Shrestha is serving as the district unit chief of BJP Yuva Morcha. He was apprehended by the local police team, reported Odisha TV.
The Bhadrak communal riot broke out on April 7, after a social media user from the town had posted offensive messages against Hindu deities. The miscreant was later arrested.
Multiple instances of violence and vandalism occurred for at least one week after the riots broke out. The state government was forced to imposed CrpC 144 to bring the situation under control. 35 platoons of State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) were rushed to Bhadrak to maintain vigil. With the situation gradually inching towards normalcy, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik visited the riot-affected region and met the victims of violence.
Over the past 20 days, Odisha police arrested nearly 146 people in connection with the riots. 8 cases have been registered against miscreants from both the communities. The Muslim youth, whose offensive social media post kickstarted the violence, is reportedly the son of a local BJD leader.
