09 Jan 2019: Benjamin Pavard to join Bayern Munich in €35 million deal
Bayern Munich have announced that Benjamin Pavard will be joining its ranks in a €35 million transfer from Stuttgart, but the move will only materialize next season.
Pavard had an impressive FIFA World Cup 2018 campaign with the French national squad, and even managed to score a goal in France's 4-3 victory against Argentina in the round of 16.
Here are the details.
Style: A little on Pavard's quality as a defender
Pavard is a versatile defender who usually plays as center-back, but has the potential to be deployed as a right-back as well.
He has a great work rate, and is also good at distributing the ball with long passes, thereby having great potential in launching counterattacks.
Bayern will benefit a lot from Pavard, and he can be a long-term defender for them.
Fact: Pavard's World Cup goal against Argentina was adjudged the best
Pavard's stunning goal against Argentina in the World Cup was voted the Goal of The Tournament among the 169 goals that were scored. He sent the ball spinning into the top corner with a brilliantly executed half-volley. France won the match 4-3
Season: Bayern started the season poorly, but have recovered since then
The 2018 Bundesliga campaign did not start positively for the Bavarians, with them losing and drawing three matches each already.
They have conceded 18 goals in their 17 matches so far, and thus have presumably signed the defender to boost their defenses.
However, despite the rocky start, they have rallied, and are currently second to Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga table, trailing by six points.
Fact: Pavard has not been able to stop Stuttgart's poor run
Pavard, however, has been unable to help his current side Stuttgart step up from the relegation zone they are currently in. The club is 17th in the Bundesliga table, and have only won four league matches this season.
Bayern Munich: Who are Bayern's other interests in this winter transfer window?
Bayern Munich have been active this transfer window, their main target being Chelsea's Callum Hudson-Odoi, whom they probably wish to sign as a replacement for Arjen Robben, who has confirmed that he will leave at the end of the season.
They have also signed Chris Richards, another center-back, from FC Dallas.
Pavard will be an important addition as Bayern rebuild their squad with younger talents.
