Bengal reports 52 fresh COVID fatalities, 3,654 new cases

(Eds: Updating with fresh inputs) Kolkata, Nov 17 (PTI) The COVID-19 death toll in West Bengal mounted to 7,766 on Tuesday after 52 more people succumbed to the disease, the health department said in a bulletin.

The tally also went up to 4,38,217 after 3,654 fresh cases of infection were reported from different parts of the state, it said.

Since Monday, 4,388 people recovered from the disease and the discharge rate now is 92.04 per cent.

The number of active cases in the state at present is 27,111, the bulletin added.

Of the fresh fatalities, 16 were reported from North 24 Parganas district and 13 from Kolkata. The remaining casualties were registered in several other districts of the state.

The bulletin said that 36 of 52 deaths were because of comorbidities where COVID-19 was incidental.

The 3,654 new positive cases included 752 from the city and 710 from neighbouring North 24 Parganas, it added.

In the last 24 hours, 44,238 samples have been tested for coronavirus, taking the total number of such tests to 53,01,162.

Meanwhile, a constable of Kolkata Police Reserve Force succumbed to COVID-19 on Tuesday taking the total number of policemen dying due to the disease to 12, an official of the health department said.

Constable Kamal Krishna Bal (53), who tested positive for the virus a fortnight back, died at a private hospital, he said. PTI SCH NN NN
