(Eds: Adding more details) Kolkata, Oct 2 (PTI) At least 3,310 more people tested positive for COVID-19 in West Bengal on Friday, which raised the tally to 2,63,634, while 53 fatalities pushed the death toll in the state to 5,070, the health department said in its bulletin.
Altogether 2,944 people were cured of the disease in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of recoveries to 2,31,699, it said.
The discharge rate currently stands at 87.89 per cent.
Kolkata witnessed 16 new deaths, while 11 fatalities were reported from North 24 Parganas district, six from Howrah and three each from South 24 Parganas and Murshidabad, the bulletin said.
Two fresh fatalities each were registered in Hooghly, East Midnapore, Bankura, Alipurduar and one each in East Burdwan, West Midnapore, Birbhum, Nadia, North Dinajpur and Darjeeling, it added.
Forty-one of the 53 deaths were due to comorbidities and COVID-19 was incidental, the bulletin said.
The maximum number of fresh cases were reported from the metropolis at 720, followed by North 24 Parganas at 655 and South 24 Parganas at 226.
West Bengal now has 26,865 active cases, the bulletin said.
The state secretariat will remain closed on Saturday and Sunday for sanitisation, an official said.
The state has so far conducted 33,14,598 sample tests, including 43,282 since Thursday, the bulletin said.
Meanwhile, BJP's new national secretary Anupam Hazra tested positive for COVID-19 and was admitted to a private hospital here, the health department official said. PTI SCH BDC BDC
