A battery is an energy storing device that transforms chemical energy into electricity. One or more than one electrochemical cells made up the battery. It consists two isolated electrodes in each electrochemical cell.
Batteries work on the simple concept of oxidation and reduction, it is made up of three basic element the cathode, anode and electrolyte. In a battery the zinc acts as a anode whereas the graphite is the cathode and the Ammonium chloride is the electrolyte.
In a chemical reaction, the anode creats some excess of electrons which results in an electrical difference between the anode and the cathode.
The excess of electrons then tries to arrange them and displace the extra electron in the cathode. Whereas due to the electrolyte they cannot travel directly to the cathode.
They are only able to travel when the circuit is closed and this free travel provides power to any electrical appliance placed in that circuit. And when the anode stops providing the electrons the batteries dies.
This is when the rechargeable batteries comes to the rescue, the electricity reverses the process and making the electrons flow back in the opposite direction making the batteries ready to use again.
