For the second time in six years, The Blues asserted their dominance as they won the UEFA Europa League title after defeating Arsenal 4-1 in the capital city of Baku in Azerbaijan on Wednesday.
Chelsea’s victory also ensured that Maurizio Sarri got the first trophy of his managerial career. With this loss, Arsenal is set to miss the Champions League next season.
Twitter was abuzz after the match. While some users compared Arsenal’s defeat to that of Brazil in 2014 against Germany, the others appreciated the efforts put in by Sarri throughout the season.
Here are some of the reactions:
For all the criticism he’s taken this season, Sarri has actually done a very reasonable job by all accounts. 3rd in the league, only lost the League Cup final on penalties vs City and very much deserved Europa League winners here.— Joel Rabinowitz (@joel_archie) May 29, 2019
Really pleased for Sarri, lifting his first major trophy. ??— Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) May 29, 2019
Well, after a season in which Chelsea fans regularly aired their frustrations towards Maurizio Sarri, he has achieved what he was tasked with: a top-four finish (#CFC finished third), a trophy (the first of his managerial career) and a move toward a different brand of football.— Vaishali Bhardwaj (@VaiBhardwaj) May 29, 2019
Whoever signs Hazard has to try and get Giroud onboard too. The two of them have a thing going on there #ARSvsCHE— Robert Cox (@extratime_sport) May 29, 2019
4-1. Beautiful combination play between Hazard and Giroud. Arsenal are dead and buried now. #UELFinal— Richard (@rpenners1) May 29, 2019
The humiliation is complete. Young lad crying in the stand. Shades of the German massacre at Brazil 2014.— RG (@registability) May 29, 2019
While Arsenal looked in control of the game in initial minutes, it was perhaps their horrid decision making that cost them the game.
While the scores were pretty even in the first-half, it was in the second half that Chelsea resorted to an attacking game-play and completely pushed Arsenal behind.
Speaking to media after the match Sarri said he was happy and lucky to be in Chelsea.
“You know very well that I love the Premier League, the level of the competition, I am lucky because I am in Chelsea, one of the best clubs in the Premier League, one of the best championships in the world. So in the moment I am happy but of course I want to know if the club is happy, if we can improve.” said Sarri.
