‘Avengers: Endgame’ Beats ‘Avatar’ as Highest Earner of All Time

The inevitable has happened. Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame is set to take the crown of the highest-grossing film of all time this weekend, toppling James Cameron’s Avatar. Disney made the announcement on Saturday 21 July. As of Friday, the global pop-culture sensation was only $500,000 behind the $2,789.7 million record set by Avatar way back in 2009. Endgame “will close this gap by tomorrow,” Disney said.

The announcement was perfectly timed as Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige appeared at San Diego Comic-Con, the world’s biggest pop culture fan convention, to reveal Marvel’s upcoming schedule of films and series set in Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

“I’ve just heard from our folks in Disney distribution that within a matter of days Avengers: Endgame will be the biggest film in history,” said Feige to huge applause from fans at the convention. “You have to shout out to James Cameron who held that title for a long time. If you adjust for inflation he still holds the title, and he’ll probably get the title again as soon as he puts out another movie.”

"“Of course, even with the passage of a decade, the impact of James Cameron’s Avatar remains as powerful as ever, and the astonishing achievements of both of these films are ongoing proof of the power of movies,” " - Kevin Feige

Avengers: Endgame had released on 29 April and had immediately set hopes to break the record. However, as the film’s run wound down in theatres, Avatar proved hard to beat. Disney re-released the film in theatres in late June with a deleted scene and special clips as a direct push to help Endgame cross the line. It looks like the gambit payed off.
