Assam struck by 6.7 magnitude earthquake at Sonitpur, tremors felt across North Bengal, Northeast

An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter Scale occurred in Tezpur of Assam today and tremors were felt across Assam, North Bengal and other parts of Northeast. The quake hit at a relatively shallow depth of 10 kilometres. The epicentre of the earthquake was 36 km west northwest of Assam's Tezpur at Dhekiajuli, the NCS said. Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal later said: "Big earthquake hits Assam. I pray for the well-being of all and urge everyone to stay alert. Taking updates from all districts." "Just experienced a massive earthquake in Assam. Waiting for details," Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted along with photos of broken walls inside a building and of a broken boundary wall.
