On Thursday, legendary singer Asha Bhosle was conferred the Maharashtra Bhushan Award, the highest honor given by the state government.

The Ministry of Culture said yesterday that she will be bestowed with the honor for the year 2020.

Before Bhosle, her elder sister, iconic singer Lata Mangeshkar, was given the honor in 1997. The latest awardee expressed gratitude toward the people of Maharashtra.

Announcement: CM Uddhav Thackeray chaired the Award committee

A meeting of the Maharashtra Bhushan Award Selection Committee, headed by Chief Minister Uddhav Thakeray, was held yesterday.

The committee also included Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, Cultural Affairs Minister Amit Vilasrao Deshmukh, and other officials.

After the meeting, Thackeray wrote about the committee's decision and congratulated the singer on Twitter. The award carries Rs. 10 lakh prize and a citation.

Reaction: She thanked the people of Maharashtra

Subsequently, Bhosle took to Twitter to thank the people of her home state Maharashtra.

"My heartfelt gratitude to the people of Maharashtra for conferring upon me the highest level of honor the state can award to an individual — the Maharashtra Bhushan Award, (sic)" the singer wrote.

She also tweeted another video, showing how she is celebrating the win.

Bhonsle shared a video on social media where she can be seen with her granddaughter Zanai Bhonsle. There is also a cake visible in the video.

Zanai asks Bhonsle how she was feeling about the achievement, to which she replies, "I have received a lot many awards, and this award is from my maayka (mother's home) that is why I am extremely happy. (sic)"

Work: Bhonsle has a long list of professional achievements

The singing legend has received many awards and felicitations along her illustrious career, including the Dada Saheb Phalke award and the Padma Vibhushan.

Having started her singing career in 1948, Bhonsle was acknowledged by the Guinness Book of World Records as "the most recorded artist in music history" in 2011.

She also has won numerous National and Filmfare awards.
