Artificial shortage created for onions; Prices soar and traders protest government policies

Onion prices have been rising throughout the country, onion prices are at Rs. 100 per kilo in parts oh Mumbai and Pune. The centre has stepped in and invoked the essential commodities act and put a stock holding limit on onions for wholesalers and retails. The policy seems to be backfiring because traders in the country’s largest wholesale market have now gone on strike over the move. They are also hoarding onions in the godown and have shut shops until the government overturns this decision.

The artificial shortage that is being created in a village in Maharashtra is causing people to shed more onion tears. The Lasalgaon market in Maharashtra is the largest market for onions in Asia.
