New Delhi, Dec 7: Every year on December 7, the three defence forces – Army, Navy and the Air Force – observe Armed Forces Flag Day to honour the men in uniform who made the supreme sacrifice while protecting the borders of the country. Since 1949, December 7 is observed as the Armed Forces Flag Day to honour the martyrs and the men in uniform who valiantly fought on the borders to safeguard the country’s honour.

After independence, the government decided to set up a welfare fund for the benefit of defence personnel. A committee was set up on August 28, 1949 which decided a Flag Day will be observed on December 7.

It was decided that small flags would be distributed to general public across the country and funds would be collected which would be utilised for the welfare of defence personnel and their families.

The Kendriya Sainik Board (KSB), which is part of the Ministry of Defence, distributes small paper flags, stickers in return of voluntary contributions from people across the country. (Also Read: Nirmala Sitharaman Appeals to Digitally Donate for Armed Forces Flag Day 2017)
