'You'd think we'd be top!' - Robertson airs surprise at unbeaten Liverpool 'still chasing'
Andy Robertson admits it is a surprise to be “still chasing” with Liverpool after seeing the club open their Premier League campaign with a 15-match unbeaten run.
The Reds are yet to come unstuck in English top-flight competition, collecting 39 points along the way, but find themselves second in the table.
That is because defending champions Manchester City have also enjoyed a faultless opening, and have two more points to show for their efforts.
Liverpool, therefore, still have much to do as they reflect on the positives of a bright start and prepare themselves for the challenges to come.
Robertson told Sky Sports of the situation at Anfield: “When you look at it and say 'you'd be unbeaten at the start of December', you [think] you'd be at the top of the league - but we're not. We're still chasing City.
“It's been a good start for us, and we need to keep going, keep focusing on what we're doing instead of looking at anyone else.
“We're controlling what we're doing right now, and if we keep putting the pressure on City, I'm sure it will go right to the end.”
While Liverpool will be hoping to see City come unstuck during the busy festive period, they will get a chance to inflict a blow of their own early in 2019.
The Reds are due to visit the Etihad Stadium on January 3 for what is shaping up to a crunch clash in a keenly-contested title tussle.
Jurgen Klopp’s side will not be getting ahead of themselves, though, as they have a number of testing fixtures to take in before then.
Robertson added: “The only result we can control against Manchester City is the one when they play us, other than that we can't.
“We need to focus on our own results. We need to keep picking up the three points.”
Liverpool’s schedule through to the end of the calendar year is set to see them take in a crucial Champions League tie with Napoli along with Premier League meetings with Bournemouth, Manchester United, Wolves, Newcastle and Arsenal.
