At least 13 people have drowned while four others are missing after their dinghy (small boat) capsized in a stream in Andhra Pradesh's Anantapur district today, the police said.
The incident took place at Yerra Timmaraju lake near Guntakal when around 15 people boarded the dinghy for a fun ride in the stream after attending a function, according to reports.
All victims belonged to one large family, a police officer said.
Six children and five women were among those drowned, he added.
Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has condoled the loss of lives and directed the Anantapuramu district collector and the Superintendent of Police to conduct rescue operations at once.
10 BODIES PULLED OUT FROM STREAM
The divers managed to pull out over 10 bodies from the stream. The bodies were taken to the government hospital in Guntakal for post-mortem, Health Minister Kamineni Srinivas said.
The overcrowding of the boat is believed to have caused the mishap, according to cops.
Local fishermen, who normally operate the dinghies for fishing, were asked not to come along as this family wanted to go in a group together, the police said.
Deputy Chief Minister (Home) N China Rajappa has also expressed shock over the incident and asked the DSP to get the victims' post-mortem conducted as soon as possible and hand over the victims' bodies to their relatives.
