Anandiben Patel Appointed Next Governor of Madhya Pradesh

Patel was appointed the chief minister of Gujarat after then CM Narendra Modi was elected to head the central government in 2014. However, Patel agitation demanding reservation in educational institutions and government jobs forced her to resign from the government.

New Delhi, Jan 19: Former Gujarat chief minister Anandiben Patel was appointed the governor of Madhya Pradesh on Friday. Patel will be replacing present governor Om Prakash Kohli, also governor of Gujarat, who has been holding the additional post of the state. Kohli was given the additional charges of Madhya Pradesh in  September 2016 after the tenure of then governor Ram Naresh Yadav came to an end.

Announcing her appointment, President Ramnath Kovind said her appointment will take place from the day she assumes office. “The President of India is pleased to appoint Smt Anandiben Patel to be the Governor of Madhya Pradesh, with effect from the date she assumes charge of her office,” tweeted Kovind.

Patel was appointed the chief minister of Gujarat after then CM Narendra Modi was elected to head the central government in 2014. However, Patel agitation demanding reservation in educational institutions and government jobs forced her to resign from the government.

Prior to her appointment as chief minister, Patel served as the education minister in Gujarat government during 2002 to 2007.

Joined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1987, Patel had handled a number of major portfolios in the Gujarat cabinet from 2007 to 2014, when Narendra Modi was the chief minister of the state.
