American couple names daughter ‘Kerala’ after they fell in love with God’s own country

Kerala who is now 8 years old recently visited the state and was surprised how people rightly pronounced her name.

The essence of Indian culture loaded with diversity and cultures that welcome foreigners with open arms need to be applauded. The charm of this country cannot be explained in words, it has to be experienced. It is not just former South African cricketer, Jonty Rhodes who loved the country so much that he named his daughter ‘India’, but another couple who did the same. An American couple fell in love with its warmth and backwaters so much so that they named their daughter as ‘Kerala’. Enamoured by the enchanting beauty of God’s own country, an American couple named their daughter as Kerala. Kerala who is now 8 years old recently visited the state and was surprised how people rightly pronounced her name. An excited Kerala was also enrolled in school for a month in the state and she also made friends.

Kerala’s parents who had visited the state decided to name her so after they were moved by the tradition and culture of the state. Charles Kramer and his wife Brenna Moore fell in love with the people and the place that they decided to name the first born in memory of their trip to Kerala. The couple had visited the state in 2006 before they got married. Ten years after the trip, they decided to go back to Kerala to let her daughter understand the roots of her name. Times of India quoted them as saying, “The hills, the lakes and the backwaters left an indelible mark on us. I even wrote a poem about Kerala. During the visit we made up our mind that we would name our first child after the beautiful state.” Kerala also has a younger brother, 5-year-old Julian who accompanied Kerala to her on the first day of her school.

The visit by the family was a part of the couple’s travel plans to go around the world in a year with their children. The project named ‘World Schooling Tour’ is aimed at understanding the teaching methods of seven continents and its 18 countries. It was their travel guide in France, Michel who helped them with the Kerala trip. Michel who had adopted a son in Kerala offered them accommodation at his sister’s. The family stayed at Manju and her husband Suresh in Cherppunkal, Kottayam. Kerala attended a school in Bharananganam for a month. (Image Credits- The News Minute)
