The results of the Alathur Lok Sabha Constituency will be declared today. The counting of votes began on the Alathur Lok Sabha seat in Kerala at 8 am on Thursday, May 23. Congress candidate Ramya Haridas is leading in Alathur constituency while CPIM) candidate Dr PK Biju is trailing. Voting took place for the Alathur Constituency on April 23. According to the Election Commission, a total voter turnout of 80.34 per cent was recorded in the constituency. Alathur is a village and gram panchayat in the Palakkad district which has a predominantly agricultural economy. Alathur Lok Sabha constituency which was earlier known as Ottappalam Lok Sabha constituency was renamed and came into existence in 2008. Former Indian President KR Narayanan represented the constituency thrice from 1977 to 2009 while it was known as Ottappalam. Alathur is among 20 constituencies in Kerala and the constituency number is 9. Alathur Lok Sabha constituency comprises of seven assembly segments including Tarur (SC), Chittur, Nenmara, Alathur, Chelakkara (SC), Kunnamkulam and Wadakkanchery. The CPM has held the Alathur constituency since 2009, after its formation. CPI (M) has fielded sitting MP, PK Biju in the constituency. Biju has won from the seat in Palakkad district in 2009 and 2014. Alathur brought PK Biju to power over Congress candidates NK Sudheer and Sheeba in 2009 and 2014, respectively. BJP candidate Shaju Mon Vattekkad came third after CPI(M) and Congress contenders.
