A group of men who stayed at an Airbnb homestay has accused their host of being racist. They took to social media with a video where a woman can be heard calling them 'monkeys'. The incident happened during an argument between the group and woman on bringing an extra friend to the Airbnb stay. While the expected number of guests were four, five members ended up at the house. They had an argument over it, following which the woman asked, "So which monkey is staying on the couch?" The Asian woman was only identified as 'Kate'. Meshach Ciscero who shared the video on social media said that he was 'livid' after the incident. The group of men were eventually kicked out of their accommodations in the middle of the night. Meshach took to Twitter saying, "Airbnb needs to fix this! We deserve better!" Following the incident, one of the men from the group took to Twitter with a series of tweets detailing what happened. He tweeted saying, "Last night, a group of friends and I reserved an Airbnb in NYC, and encountered a racist and rude host. When we arrived at our @Airbnb, we were harassed several times before being thrown out at 2 am. Her reasonings were because she felt unsafe, she assumed we were going to steal and destroy her property. After being harassed by her nonstop, she then told us to “Get the fuck out of her house immediately!” We cooperated and began to pack our things to leave. Meshach further writes, "We asked her to at least respect our privacy while packing since someone had just gotten out of the shower. She yells "No, it's my house. Get the fuck out! You are all criminals! I don't feel safe in my home!" She later asked us “Which monkey is sleeping on the couch?" He adds, "We are a group of 4 educated and working professionals and were classified as criminals and animals over and over again. This was very traumatic for us, personally. She became so angry, rude, and disrespectful that we had to call @NYPD because we weren’t sure if she'd attack us."
The video garnered a lot of negative reaction against the woman.
The thread of tweets was quick to viral along with the video. As the clip was widely being shared on social media, public affairs rep Ben Breit told Atlanta Black Star said, "The language used in this video is unacceptable and has no place in the Airbnb community. We have a strict non-discrimination policy, which we are enforcing to remove the host from our platform. We are supporting Mr Cisero and his friends in getting them a new place to stay through our Open Doors policy. We are thankful to them for bringing this to our attention so we could take action."
