In the battle for Jayalalithaa's legacy in her Assembly constituency, the ruling AIADMK in Tamil Nadu has decided to field party chief Sasikala's nephew and Deputy General Secretary, TTV Dinakaran, against Amma's niece, Deepa Jayakumar.
The April 12 bypoll in the RK Nagar seat, which Jayalalithaa won twice, was necessitated by her demise following a long illess in December last year.
Claiming Jayalalithaa's legacy, Jayakumar had in February launched the MGR Amma Deepa Federation and announced that she would be contesting from RK Nagar. She had also alleged that AIADMK chief Sasikala hijacked the party after Jayalalithaa's death.
The rebel O Panneerselvam camp in the AIADMK is expected to support Jayakumar's candidature or nominate a candidate of its own for the by-election.
The opposition DMK has also decided to contest the RK Nagar seat, with the party's allies - the Congress, IUML, MMK and Eswaran-led Kongu Nadu Makkal Desiya Katchi - pledging their support.
The PWF too, comprising the CPM, the CPI, and the VCK, has already announced that it would fight the RK Nagar bypoll.
