Former New England Patriots' Tight End Aaron Hernandez has reportedly committed suicide on Wednesday April 19 at a Massachusetts prison, while serving a life sentence. The National Football League (NFL) player was 27.

According to the Massachusetts Department of Correction, Hernandez was found hanging in his cell at the Souza Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley Massachusetts, in the wee hours of the morning.

On April 19, 2017 Aaron Hernandez was discovered hanged in his cell by corrections officers at the Souza Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley Massachusetts at approximately 3:05 a.m., lifesaving techniques were attempted on Mr. Hernandez and he was transported to UMASS Leominster where he was pronounced dead at 4:07 a.m. by a physician at the hospital.

Mr. Hernandez was in a single cell in a general population housing unit. Mr. Hernandez hanged himself utilizing a bed sheet that he attached to his cell window.

Mr. Hernandez also attempted to block his door from the inside by jamming the door with various items. The Massachusetts State Police are on scene and the investigation continues. Mr. Hernandez's next of kin have been notified.

  • May 15, 2014: The former NFL man was charged for the 2012 double homicide of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado.

WHAT HAD HAPPENED: On July 16, 2012, Dorchester duo Daniel Jorge Correia de Abreu, 29, and Safiro Teixeira Furtado, 28, were murdered by gunshots fired in their vehicle. The incident took place in Boston's South End.

Hernandez was charged of committing murder as well as additional charges, including armed assault and attempted murder associated with shots fired at the surviving occupants in the vehicle.

  • April 14, 2017: Hernandez was  acquited for the double homicide, but he continued serving a life sentence for the murder of Odin Lloyd in North Attleboro in June 2013.

WHAT HAD HAPPENED: On June 18, 2013, the Massachusetts State Police searched Hernandez's house in North Attleboro over the murder of Odin Lloyd, who used to play as a linebacker for the Boston Bandits. Lloyd was found with at least ten gunshot wounds to his back and chest.

The crime was committed on June 17. After thorough search, Hernandez was found guilty and he was charged with first-degree murder, in addition to five gun-related charges, and was held without bail at the Bristol County Jail.

Hernandez was arrested on June 26, 2013, nine days after Lloyd's death, and charged with the murder. Ninety minutes after his arrest, Hernandez was released by the Patriots.

On April 15, 2015, he was found guilty of murder in the first degree -- a crime in Massachusetts, carrying an automatic life sentence in without parole, including five firearm charges.
