Aarey forest row: In a major decision by the Maharashtra government, 600 acres of land in Aarey Milk Colony in Mumbai has been marked as a reserve forest. However, the metro car shed project won't be part of this reserve forest.
This means 1/5 of the colony land will come under the reserve forest category. The government said the decision has been taken in the interest of the tribal community residing there.
The decision of the government is significant in view of the controversy over the planned development in the area. Several environmental groups and citizens had objected to any construction arguing that Aarey is a forest area.
