Aamir Khan Has Just Proved He Is The Only Superstar Who Doesn’t Care About Box Office Numbers
Aamir Khan is going to be back on screen this Diwali. The actor has an extended cameo in Secret Superstar, which is also produced under his banner – Aamir Khan Productions. The film revolves around Insia (Dangal fame Zaira Wasim) who’s dreams and aspirations of becoming a singer are crushed under her burqa and her regressive, conservative father’s diktats.
The film was earlier scheduled for an August released and then pushed to Diwali 2017 (October 19), where it will clash with Rohit Shetty’s Golmaal Again. At the song launch of Main Kaun Hoon, Aamir spoke about film’s releasing during festivals, especially Diwali. He pointed out that Diwali is not the best day to release a film. Confused, so were we! But what Aamir said made perfect sense.
“Diwali day sees really bad numbers at the box office. So business wise it is not a great day to present a film,” highlighting how the number game has been reigning supreme in Bollywood, Aamir added, “Producers and distributors want the first day collections to be good enough to break some records and make new ones and therefore they have been shying away from releasing a film on Diwali day and opting for the days after the festival.” ALSO READ: You’ll Agree With Aamir Khan’s Comment On Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan’s Recent Box Office Failures
Interestingly, despite knowing why there are not enough footfalls in the theatres on Diwali, he still chose the date for his film’s release. “We as Indian are busy with our friends and relatives during festivals. The business picks up the next day on wards when people are in vacation, festive mode and start going out,” he said further revealing his reason for choosing the particular date – October 19. “We decided on the date since that day’s collection isn’t important for us. But that day is considered ‘shubh’ and so we wanted to choose a day basis our emotions and not the collections,” said the star who will be seen in Thugs of Hindostan next year.
Aamir, who is also the producer of Secret Superstar, clearly hinted at how the box office numbers do not bother him. He is one of the rare stars who have taken risks and proved that content is King. In an era where actors are shying away from playing their age, Aamir played an older character in Dangal (2016), which went on to create history in Indian and international box office. While most stars today talk about how box office numbers do not bother them, Aamir is one who has proved the same by choosing out of the box subjects, playing versatile characters and this time with Secret Superstar, as a producer as well. I won’t be surprised if Secret Superstar picks up on strong word of mouth and becomes one of the most successful films we have seen this year. Anyway, the ones with great expectations have been disappointing so far. Let’s hope Aamir Khan’s Secret Superstar creates a stir at the box office.
