Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra for his bravery and presence of mind in the Battle of Basantar during the Indo-Pak war of 1971. This 21-year-old soldier was part of the 47th Brigade which was to establish a bridgehead across the River Basantar, only to reach the other side and discover that the place was checkered with deadly mines. Their engineers were able to clear half the mines when they noticed with alarm that the enemy was advancing upon them. They made a momentous decision to move forward, despite the lack of sufficient armour and the mines. Khetarpal pushed on even after losing many of his men and destroyed a number of enemy tanks before being killed in action.
