RS polls: BJP wins 9 seats in UP, avenges bypoll defeat; 1 seat goes to SP

While Congress bagged three Rajya Sabha seats, BJP won one in the biennial election held in Karnataka along with five other states on Friday, 23 March.
Meanwhile, Telangana's ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi bagged all three seats in the state. In West Bengal, four seats were won by TMC, and one by Congress. The BJP claimed the seat in Chhattisgarh and MP Veerendra Kumar, the state president of the Janata Dal (U) Sharad Yadav faction, retained his seat in Kerala.

  • The other states which went to polls today are West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chattisgarh and Telangana
  • Earlier on 15 March, 33 candidates from 10 states were declared elected unopposed

In a major setback for Mayawati, the BJP candidate Anil Agarwal has won the tenth Rajya Sabha seat from Uttar Pradesh, defeating BSP's BR Ambedkar in the counting of second preference votes.

Arun Jaitley, GVL Narasimha Rao elected

BJP’s Anil Jain has been elected to the Upper House of Parliament from Uttar Pradesh. The results for nine seats for Uttar Pradesh have finally come in. The BJP has won 8 seats and the Samajwadi Party bagged one. SP candidate Jaya Bachchan got 38 seats while all eight BJP candidates got 39 votes each. All eyes are now on the results of the tenth seat.

The eight BJP members who will be sent to Rajya Sabha from UP are Arun Jaitley, Ashok Bajpai, Vijaya Pal Singh Tomar, Sakal Deep Rajbhar, Kanta Kardam, Anil Jain, Harnath Singh Yadav and GVL Narsimha Rao.

1 Vote Each of BSP and BJP Disqualified

The Election Commission has reportedly disqualified one vote each of the BJP and BSP, while counting the votes.

Congress Wins 3 RS Seats, BJP One in Karnataka

While the ruling Congress in Karnataka bagged three Rajya Sabha seats, the BJP could only win one in the biennial election.

Congress' Dr L Hanumanthaiah, Dr Syed Naseer Hussain and GC Chandrasekhar and the BJP's Rajeev Chandrashekar were declared elected by the returning officer.

4 Seats in West Bengal to TMC, One to Congress

UP: Counting of votes begins

Counting of votes for Rajya Sabha elections begins in Uttar Pradesh after clearance from the Election Commission. Counting was halted after BSP has filed complaint with EC saying MLAs Nitin Agarwal and Anil Singh did not show votes to polling agents before casting their vote. Both these MLAs are believed to have cross-voted.

Veerendra Kumar elected from Kerala

Janata Dal leader MP Veerendra Kumar elected to Rajya Sabha from Kerala. He got 89 votes while his opponent D Babu Prasad of the Congress polled 40 votes. Eight legislators of the Kerala Congress (Mani) and lone BJP MLA O Rajagopal boycotted the polling.

Delay in UP Over Votes of Nitin Agarwal, Anil Singh

The SP and BSP has demanded that the EC declare the votes of SP MLA Nitin Agarwal and BSP MLA Anil Singh for allegedly hiding their votes. The EC will reportedly begin counting after scrutinising the CCTV camera footage.

While Singh claims to have shown his vote to polling agent Lalaji Verma, Agarwal claims to have shown his vote to Lalai Singh.

Counting Stopped in UP as SP-BSP Complain Against MLAs Who Cross-Voted

The Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party, locked in a tight contest with the BJP for the tenth seat from Uttar Pradesh, have approached the Election Commission, seeking the cancellation of the votes cast by SP MLA Nitin Agrawal and BSP MLA Anil Singh.

Nitin is the son of former SP leader Naresh Agrawal, who joined the BJP recently after being denied a BJP ticket.

He had said that Nitin would vote for the saffron party. Singh, BSP MLA from Unnao’s Purva, chose to vote for the BJP candidate and justified his action by saying, “My vote is with Maharaj (Yogi Adityanath). I have taken the decision after listening to my Antaratma (Conscience)."

SP and BSP, in their complaint, argued for cancellation on the grounds that the two legislators had not disclosed their votes to their parties. This is the reason why the counting of votes has not started.

Election Commission is examining the issue, reports CNN-News18's Pranshu Mishra.

JD(S) Wants Karanataka Voting Cancelled

The Janata Dal (Secular) cried foul demanding cancellation of Rajya Sabha Elections in Karnataka, News18 reported.

The JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy alleged that the returning officer favoured the ruling Congress and that two MLAs from the Congress cross-voted for the BJP, News18 added.

Meanwhile, following protests and chaos in the Lok Sabha, the House was again adjourned for the day till Tuesday, March 27.

BSP MLA Anil Singh has said, ‘I have voted for BJP, I don't know about the rest’, according to media reports.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has expressed confidence that it will win nine Rajya Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh.

MLAs in Uttar Pradesh are voting to fill up 10 Rajya Sabha seats today. The BJP, which has a three-fourths majority in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, has enough numbers to get candidates election on eight Rajya Sabha seats.

The Samajwadi Party is likely to win a Rajya Sabha seat as well while the final seat will see a close contest between the BJP and the Bahujan Samaj Party.

It is this contest with the BSP that the BJP says it is confident of winning. A BSP MLA has already confirmed that he cross-voted in favour of the BJP. Anil Singh, the BSP MLA in question, told reporters, "I have voted for BJP, I don't know about the rest."

While results for the Rajya Sabha elections will be out only later this evening, the BJP has said it is certain of winning nine Rajya Sabha seats.

"BJP will win all the nine Rajya Sabha seats where we have fielded our candidates. Nine more BJP candidates will make entry to Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh this time," UP deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

Along with Uttar Pradesh, Rajya Sabha elections are also being held in Kerala (1 seat), Chhattisgarh (1), Jharkhand (2), Telangana (3), Karnataka (4), and West Bengal (5).

Voting Begins

The voting for 26 Rajya Sabha seats in six states begins.

Voting to Start at 9 am

Voting in the six states – Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Karnataka, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Telangana – will be held between 9 am and 4 pm on Friday. The polls are to fill 26 of 59 Rajya Sabha seats which are vacant; 33 candidates were elected unopposed earlier.

The counting of votes is to be done in the evening.

Vacancies Across 17 States to be Filled

The term of the office of 58 members of the Rajya Sabha from 16 states is due to expire on their retirement in April-May 2018. Apart from these vacancies, an additional vacancy in Kerala needs to be filled.
